Even as Miss Universe fever continues to engulf the nation days after the 65th edition of the world’s most prestigious pageant has concluded, many are now setting their sights in the future and are looking for the next batch of beauty queens from, yes, the entertainment industry.
But despite a vote of confidence from no less than Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach, 19-year old actress Liza Soberano told InterAksyon that joining beauty pageant is not among her immediate plans even though she’s not ruling out a future run at Binibining Pilipinas, the stepping stone to Miss Universe.
Another actress whose blooming appearance at the press conference of “Moonlight Over Baler,” prompted not a few entertainment scribes to quip that she’s also beauty queen material is Sophie Albert.
Like Liza, however, Sophie said she’s not quite ready to be as she calls it, “a beauty pageant person.”
“Actually, I’m really flattered when people ask me that question. Honestly, I really don’t feel confident enough to be a beauty queen. I look up to all of the beauty queens but I don’t really believe that I am the type,” Sophie recently told InterAksyon during the press conference.
It can be recalled that Sophie along with “Moonlight Over Baler” co-star and ex-boyfriend Vin Abrenica, won the grand prize of TV5’s defunct talent search series, “Artista Academy” in 2012. The following year, she and Vin were then formally launched in the teleserye, “Never Say Goodbye” supported by seasoned actors Cesar Montano, Alice Dixson and Superstar Nora Aunor.
After that, she continued to be a mainstay of several TV5 shows including “Wattpad Presents” and “No Harm, No Foul.” By 2014, she made her big screen debut in Gino M. Santos’ acclaimed Cinemalaya indie, “#Y” but after which her career stagnated.
Sophie said that she is seeking a release from TV5 and is in talks with ABS-CBN where Vin and another former TV5 star, Ritz Azul are now under contract. As she could not accept other offers while still under contract with the Happy Network, Sophie admitted that she thought of leaving showbiz until she was offered the role of the younger Fidela in “Moonlight Over Baler.”
Written by Eric Ramos and directed by Gil Portes, the film is set in 1986 shortly after the EDSA People Power Revolution and right before and during World War II. Portes said the “epic tale of romance and sacrifice spanning several generations.” was inspired by the life story of his own aunt who lives in Quezon Province.
In the film, Fidela is presented as an aging schoolteacher played by Elizabeth Oropesa who in her younger years was set to marry a soldier named Nestor (Vin Abrenica). When Nestor fought in the war and never came back, Fidela was left heartbroken.
“What Fidela went through was really tough. She was already engaged but the man she was going to marry did not come back to her. She did not know what happened to him, where he was, if he was even alive. When I read the script, I cried during one scene so that’s why I accepted doing this project. I really prefer to do drama and this film gave me an opportunity to do that,” Sophie noted.
Asked if she felt uncomfortable doing a film with Vin which was shot at a time when they ended their relationship, Sophie admitted that there were some awkward moments.
“But we remained comfortable with each other. We’re still friends, we talk all the time, and we still see each other all the time. It’s just that we’re not tied down to each other anymore,” she shared.
When told that Vin said that the status of their relationship at the time of the shoot somehow helped and even enhanced her performance, Sophie just smiled.
“Maybe. During that time, we were going through something so at least I was able to put it to good use,” she quipped.
As to whether or not she’s now seeing another guy that may have something to do with radiant glow, Sophie just shrugged it off and said that she’s very much contented with her single status.
“The reason Vin and I separated so we can have a little bit more focus on our careers and respective lives. We talked about it during the filming and now I was able to do that and I’m very happy.”
Even as she eagerly looks forward to be part of the Kapamilya network, Sophie is already excited about her coming project with Wilma Galvante’s Content Cows Company.
“I just did an advocacy film with Martin del Rosario called ‘Till The End of Us.’ I’m not exactly sure when it’s going to be shown but I’m really excited,” she exclaimed.
“Moonlight Over Baler” also stars Ellen Adarna, Daria Ramirez, Menggie Cobarrubias, Angie Ferro, Kate Alejandrino, Abel Estanislao, Aaron Yanga, Dennis Coronel, Alvin Fortuna, Jess Evardone, Jun Nayra and Blaine Medina.
